DIFFERENCES BETWEEN AN ELECTROPHYSIOLOGIST AND A CARDIOLOGIST
An electrophysiologist is more like a person who has more focused studies on a particular area of cardiology. At the same time, a cardiologist is trained and skilled in dealing with diseases that affect the heart region. It is easier to view in this form as cardiology is a tree, and electrophysiology is the branch on the tree of cardiology. A cardiologist is known to focus on the mechanical function of the heart. They are trained in studying the state and the health of the heart muscle and the entire vascular system, which includes the arteries and the blood vessels. However, cardiologists do not just treat or test for issues around the heart. They also educate patients on creating habits that promote a healthy state of nature. However, on the other side, an electrophysiologist places more focus on the heart’s electrical system. When the heart muscle pumps blood into the arteries, it depends on the electrical system to cause it to pump.
That is why an electrophysiologist, as a branch of cardiology, has to focus on issues with the heart’s electrical signals that can cause several complications in the heart’s rhythms. Hence, electrophysiologists study and treat heart irregular rhythms, often referred to as arrhythmias. They are very skilled in conducting a specialized test in that area of the heart, also treat those conditions, and may suggest medication that help takes care of the effect as well as structuring a lifestyle that will help maintain a healthy state of heart and take away some risk factors, that can lead to complication around the rhythm of the that will now get to affect the flow of blood in the heart and the heart vessels. An electrophysiologist is usually referred to as EP(s).
However, in summary, a cardiologist and an electrophysiologist differ in their degrees of specialization. All electrophysiologists are cardiologists who have passed through an extra year or more to be trained. All electrophysiologists can be said to be a cardiologist. However, not all cardiologists are electrophysiologists.
